More than character reading. The Areatec ALPR Engine combines high-performance cameras with the embedded Aretron engine to process plates in milliseconds at 98.7% accuracy, even at high speed and in adverse conditions.
By Márcio Alexandroni, Product Engineering Director at Areatec
When we started developing our plate-reading technology at Areatec more than two decades ago, we knew that traditional OCR (Optical Character Recognition) methods based on static rules would fail in the real world. A dirty plate, a day of heavy rain, or the poor lighting of Brazilian highways were enough to drop accuracy to unacceptable levels.
We decided we needed to build something different. That is how the Aretron engine was born. Instead of relying on fixed character templates, we developed a deep neural network architecture that learns complex visual patterns directly from images. We trained this model with more than 2 billion real frames captured on Brazilian streets.
Our greatest technical pride is edge processing (Edge AI). Our artificial intelligence algorithms run directly on the cameras and computers embedded in the vehicles, without needing to transmit video or raw data to the cloud. This means the system processes each plate in less than 100 milliseconds and keeps working accurately even in areas with no internet signal or mobile coverage.
Today, with 98.7% proven accuracy and SENATRAN certification, we deliver to cities a tool that not only reads plates but brings real operational intelligence to urban mobility management.
Engineering built for the real challenges of urban mobility and enforcement.
Local inference directly on embedded hardware. Instant reading with no latency and no unnecessary network data usage.
Neural networks developed in-house by our engineering team and optimized for Mercosul and legacy-format plates.
Reliable accuracy in heavy rain, fog, total darkness, and with dirty or worn plates.
Reads moving vehicles at speeds of up to 180 km/h, ideal for active mobile enforcement.
Technology compliant with federal ordinances and CONTRAN resolutions, ensuring full legal certainty.
Instant connection with the Electronic Ticketing system, municipal traffic systems, security databases, and parking ERPs.
A single technology, multiple scenarios of urban impact and security.
Automatic detection of violations such as driving in exclusive lanes, irregular speed, expired registration, and other infractions defined in the traffic code. The system generates georeferenced digital tickets ready for validation by the traffic authority.
Engineering that meets the strictest market requirements.
