How do I know if I've been fined?

Learn how to check for a Zona Azul parking fine: DETRAN, app, official notice, and deadlines to file a defense.

To find out whether you've been fined for parking improperly in Zona Azul, Brazil's paid rotational street parking, the most reliable way is to look up your vehicle's license plate at your state's DETRAN (state traffic department) and in the city hall's fines system. The penalty doesn't show up instantly: it goes through several stages, and you're officially informed by an official notice mailed to the vehicle owner's address. In the meantime, a few signs may already indicate something is on the way, and it's worth checking.

A notice on the windshield is not a fine

The first misunderstanding to clear up: a slip of paper left on the windshield, or an alert in the app, usually is not the formal ticket. In many cities, that notice means the system detected no active Zona Azul session and is giving you a chance to set things right, generally through the Post-Use Fee (TPU). If you pay the TPU within the deadline (which varies by municipality), the case is closed and never becomes a fine. Only if you ignore this step does the formal penalty process move forward.

Where to check for a fine

  1. Your state's DETRAN — using your plate and Renavam, on the official website or app, you can see the infractions recorded against the vehicle.
  2. City hall portal or municipal traffic authority — where Zona Azul is municipal, the penalty usually appears in the city's system.
  3. Zona Azul app — in cities served by Areatec, Digipare shows your history of sessions and notices, helping you understand what happened.
  4. Notice by mail — the official penalty notice is sent to the owner's registered address.

How the process works until a fine "takes effect"

A traffic penalty isn't issued ready-made. It follows a path:

Stage What happens
Infraction record The officer or system records the irregularity with evidence
Notice of infraction You're officially informed and a deadline opens for a preliminary defense
Notice of penalty Once confirmed, the charge and the deadline to appeal arrive

It's precisely because of these stages that it pays to monitor your plate: the sooner you know, the more time you have to defend yourself.

Keep your registration up to date

Many drivers only discover the fine too late because the notice went to an old address. Keep the vehicle's address current at the DETRAN. That way the notice arrives, the defense deadline starts running correctly, and you don't lose your chance to appeal.

If the fine is for Zona Azul

The fine for parking in violation of regulated parking is the one under CTB Art. 181, XVII (Brazilian Traffic Code): serious infraction, R$ 195.23, and 5 license points, with possible vehicle removal. This value is national and fixed. If you believe you had a valid session, keep the app receipt: it's your evidence to appeal.
