If you are in an unfamiliar city and don't know the rules for Zona Azul (Brazil's paid rotational street parking), always start with the street sign on the road and then with that city's official app. Because every municipality sets its own rules for price, hours and maximum stay, you can't assume the same rules apply as in your home town. The good news is that finding the local rules takes only a few minutes if you follow the right order.
Start with the signage on the street
The parking regulation sign (the R-6b) and the information posted near it are the primary source. They tell you where the charge applies, on which days and times, and how long you can stay. Before opening any app, look around the parking space: the signage is what legally defines the rule for that stretch of road. Where there is no regulated parking signage, there is usually no rotational parking charge.
Identify the city's official app
Every city adopts its own activation system. To find the right one:
- Look for the app name on the sign itself or on stickers on the meters and points of sale.
- Check the city hall website or the municipal traffic authority.
- In cities served by Areatec, the app is Digipare, which shows the local rules once you select the city.
When you open the app and choose the city, you usually see the price, maximum time and hours already configured for that municipality, which removes the guesswork.
What changes from city to city
Because it is a municipal responsibility, practically everything about the operation can vary:

If you make a mistake, is there a safety net?
Many cities offer the Post-Use Fee (TPU), a kind of second chance: if you forgot to activate or overstayed, you pay an administrative fee within a deadline and become compliant, without it turning into a fine. But beware: not every city has the TPU, and the value and deadline vary according to local law. Don't count on it as a guarantee; count on activating correctly.
The risk of simply ignoring it
If you park in a regulated area without activating and don't regularize, the case can be cited under CTB Art. 181, XVII (Brazilian Traffic Code): a serious violation, R$ 195.23, 5 license points and removal of the vehicle. That amount is national, the same in every city. That's why spending two minutes to understand the local rule always pays off.
